July 12, 2025 - Moving forward, I have found another distro that I have been using for the past couple days called AxOS. Another Arch based Linux system that seems to have caught my eye. Similar to CachyOS, this one seems to be much faster and zippy as CachyOS but has a different vibe. It's very pleasing on the eye and does well under the KDE desktop. For now, I am going to keep with this distro and see how it goes. Knowing it's being developed by a single developer gives me hope that it will get even better in time.
May 22, 2025 - I have finally Star Citizen up and running on my Linux CachyOS distribution using GNOME. So far everything is working well. Seems the more you play the smoother it gets. It takes a little time loading the shader cache. Right now I am at a good place. Runs just as smooth as it did on Microsoft Windows. Currently I am using an desktop with an MSI motherboard using the ROG Strix GeForce RTX® 4090 OC Edition 24GB GDDR6X with DLSS 3, 64Gb DDR5 ram memory, 2Tb SSD Drive and LG 45GR65DC-B Ultragear Curved Gaming Monitor 45-Inch 32:9 QHD 200Hz 1ms UltraWide Display AMD FreeSync Premium Pro VESA DisplayHDR 600 HDMI 2.1 x2 DP UBS x3. My next test will be on a KDE Desktop and then on a Lenovo Legion 7 laptop with 64Gb ram, 2Tb SSD Drive and an GeForce RTX 4080 GPU on a 240Hz QHD screen. Lastly I will install it on a HP Victus with 64Gb ram, 1Tb SSD Drive and an GeForce RTX 4050 GPU on a 144Hz screen. Should be interesting to see the difference with all three machines. I will update my logs as soon as I have that answer.
Feb 16, 2025 - Well today is a mile stone with some achievements on my Journey to switch from Microsoft Windows to Linux. After spending the greater part of a month looking over and researching different distros, looking at the strengths and weaknesses, I have settled on CashyOS an Arch based system. After loading the OS and taking time to add the proper 3rd party Nvidia drivers and a few tweaks here and there I was able to install the Persistent Universe on my duel book desktop. Quite a mile stone if I do say so myself!
Playing the game however did have a couple setbacks if I am being honest. Although the game played for the most part without a hitch, I did experience some studder while playing. Now my system I tested it on is a Ryzen 9 7800X3D with 64 gigabytes of ram, an RTX 4090 (Republic of Gamers) GPU and a 2TB 7800 Mb/s SSD. For all intents and purposes this machine should run like butter like it does in Windows but there still is something that needs to be resolved. I have reached out to the CID LUG (Linux Users Group) org in hopes I find a solution. I am sure they more farther than me when it comes to tuning Star Citizen in a Linux environment.
Jan 4, 2025 - Hey Everyone, I am in the process of converting my Star Citizen game and installer from Windows to Linux. Fedora 41 is the distro I am going to attempt it on seeing it has the latest kernel. I am hoping to have something by Mid January of 2025. If anyone knows of any places I can go to get this done that would be most helpful. My plan is to convert to Linux and then start a YouTube channel with shipping, mining and travels. Looking forward to updating this site with my journey. You can reach me at the email link below. --LT
